KOF Economic Sentiment Indicator

The KOF Economic Sentiment Indicator for Switzerland is based on the results of the KOF Business Tendency Surveys and the Consumer Confidence Survey conducted by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

The calculation method used for the Swiss indicators follows the method employed by the EU Commission to calculate indicators for all EU member states as well as various aggregates, for instance total EU or Euro area.

To construct the KOF Economic Sentiment Indicator, results from the KOF Business Tendency Surveys conducted among manufacturing, construction and retail companies as well as other service providers are used; the results of the Consumer Confidence Surveys from SECO are also included. The indicators from the individual surveys are weighted as follows to produce the overall Economic Sentiment Indicator:

  • Manufacturing 40 %
  • Construction 5 %
  • Retail 5 %
  • Other service providers 30 %
  • Consumer confidence survey 20 %

For the confidence indicators, the individual results of the questions in the respective surveys or sectors are averaged. A detailed description of the method as well as current results for the EU are available on the external page European Commission website.
