Stefan Pichler, PostDoc at the Chair of Applied Macroeconomics (KOF, D-MTEC), received the “Scientific Award 2018” from the German Society for Health Economics dggö (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gesundheitsökonomie e.V.).
He reiceived the award for his paper “The pros and cons of sick pay schemes: Testing for contagious presenteeism and noncontagious absenteeism behavior”. The award was presented at the Annual Meeting of the dggö on 5 March 2018 in Hamburg.
In their paper, Stefan Pichler and Nicolas R. Ziebarth (Cornell University) analyse the effect of the introduction of paid sick leave in the USA and the impact of the amended sick pay regulations in Germany on various diseases. They set up a model, which allows them to quantify negative externalities that arise through contagion. Thus, the Paper provides a framework for identifying contagion under different conditions. In addition, the results show that paid sick leave is an appropriate measure for counteracting such negative externalities.
A short version of the article can be found in the KOF Bulletin No. 117, April 2018.
