KOF Economic Barometer: Economic recovery in Switzerland strengthens

The KOF Economic Barometer rises at an accelerated pace in January and for the second month in a row. It nonetheless remains below its medium-term average. But the outlook for the Swiss economy at the beginning of the year is considerably less gloomy than it was in autumn last year.

The KOF Economic Barometer rises by 5.7 points in January to an index level of 97.2 (revised from 91.5 in December). All bundles of indicators contribute to the improvement. They are developing particularly favourably in manufacturing, hospitality and the services sector. Nevertheless, the indicator bundles for manufacturing and services are below their medium-term average. The indicators for the hospitality sector, on the other hand, jump above the average, so the prospects here are now better than average.

In the goods producing sector (manufacturing and construction), the picture is more favourable or at least stable in all aspects of business activity. The indicators for the further demand situation and production are developing particularly positively. At the other end of the range of variation, it is the indicators for employment development and the competitive situation that are not moving upwards. They remain practically unchanged from the previous month.

In manufacturing, the wood and paper products, other manufacturing, machinery and equipment manufacturing, electrical engineering, and chemical and pharmaceutical industries are all contributing to the positive development. In the other sub-industries of manufacturing, the indicators hardly move.
