KOF Swiss Innovation and Digitalization Survey

The Swiss Innovation and Digitalization Survey (SIDS) of the KOF is the official biennial implementation of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) of the European Union in Switzerland. The KOF Swiss Economic Institute conducts the survey since 1990 on behalf of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and since 2017 on behalf of the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). Until 2011, it took place triennially.

The KOF SIDS is based on the KOF Enterprise Panel (KEP). Since 2005, the questionnaire of the external page Community Innovation Survey (CIS) of the European Union is supplemented by a slightly shortened version of the questionnaire of the KOF Swiss Digitalization Survey (SDS). The SDS is based on the external page Community Survey on ICT Usage and e-commerce in Enterprises (ISOC_E) of the European Union and contains questions on information and communications technologies such as e-commerce, social media, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics, big data, and information security.
The SIDS has three objectives:

  • First, it allows an assessment of the innovative strength of and the degree of digitalization in the Swiss economy (descriptive analysis).
  • Second, it informs Swiss innovation and economic policies (normative analysis).
  • Third, it contributes to the scientific research of the innovation and digitalization processes in companies (explicative analysis).

Use the anonymized microdata in the KOF Microdata Centre. Use the KOF Time Series Explorer to study the aggregated data as time series or use the external page Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) for a harmonized international comparison.
