Healthcare expenditure in Switzerland will continue to grow over the forecasting period (2022 to 2025). However, its share of gross domestic product will stabilise at around 11.5 per cent. These are the key findings of KOF’s healthcare expenditure forecast, which was prepared with the help of a research contribution from comparis.ch.

Healthcare spending will rise by 2.9 per cent this year. The growth rate will increase slightly to 3.6 per cent in 2023 and decrease again slightly to 3.1 per cent in 2024. Compared with economic output, healthcare expenditure will rise less sharply than in previous years. Healthcare expenditure will increase by 7.3 per cent this year owing to the pandemic. The growth rate will then fall significantly to 1.3 per cent in 2022 and 1.2 per cent in 2023. Swiss healthcare spending in 2019 is set to rise by 3.6%, which is slightly higher than in the two previous years. The main reasons for this increase continue to be the modest rise in wages and the growing elderly proportion of the population. Healthcare spending in 2020 and 2021 is likely to increase by 3.3% and 3.6% respectively. KOF expects healthcare spending in Switzerland to rise by 3.7 per cent this year. This is a slightly larger increase than in 2018 (2.8 per cent) and 2017 (2.6 per cent). This stronger growth can partly be attributed to the modest rise in wages and the increase in the number of elderly people. This KOF Forecast has been compiled with the help of research funding provided by the Swiss Pharmacists' Association pharmaSuisse and the Association of Groups of Independent Pharmacies (VGUA).

Although growth in Swiss health care spending slowed slightly last year, it is likely to accelerate to 3.9 per cent by 2019. While rising wages and an aging population are driving up health care expenditure, the political initiatives introduced should rein in costs to some extent. This year will see per-capita spending exceed CHF 10,000 for the first time.
