There is currently a lack of economic growth in the European Union. In addition, demographic change and unresolved structural problems are slowing economic activity. Once the European elections have been held in June, the new EU government will face major challenges. Brexit has put the issue of independence back on the political agenda in Scotland. This publication examines what economic factors reinforce separatist tendencies. Regional resource wealth plays a central role in this context. In particular, the analysis shows that oil discoveries have a causal effect on the electoral success of Scottish separatists.
