KOF Business Tendency Surveys: Swiss economy at a stable high
The KOF Business Situation Indicator edged back up in April after having dipped slightly in the previous month. Overall, therefore, the Indicator has stabilised around the highest level it has reached since 2014. The Swiss economy’s upward trajectory is intact.
Performance by sector
The business situation in April varied from sector to sector. Financial service providers, insurers, construction companies and the accommodation and food service industry all reported that their business had improved, while the business situation of other service providers and of wholesalers remained virtually unchanged. The project engineering industry and manufacturing firms did not quite manage to replicate their impressive performance of the previous month. The weakest performance of all sectors in April was achieved by retailers, whose business situation relative to the other sectors fell further behind.
Business situation by region
In April, there was hardly any change in the business situation across almost all regions. The situation in the Lake Geneva region deteriorated slightly more. This region is also an exception in terms of its year-to-date performance. The business situation in Eastern Switzerland, Central Switzerland, the Zurich region, Northwestern Switzerland and Ticino has improved since January. There was no major change in Espace Mittelland, while the Lake Geneva region fell behind.
